Identity

One compound, a dozen names.

The material you receive from us is hexamethylenetetramine. Depending on the market, the decade and the industry, the same white powder is ordered as urotropine, hexamine, methenamine, formin, aminoform or simply HMTA. Central European purchase orders typically say urotropina; English-language technical standards say hexamine.

Structurally it is a cage of four nitrogen atoms joined by six methylene bridges — a symmetrical, tension-free arrangement that explains its stability as a solid and its willingness to release formaldehyde once heated or acidified. It is manufactured by reacting formaldehyde with ammonia in aqueous solution, then crystallising and drying the product.

What that means in practice Hexamine is the safe, storable way to keep formaldehyde on site. It is a solid at room temperature, it does not off-gas in sealed packaging, and it delivers the reactive species only where your process asks for it.

Grades

Stabilised or unstabilised — the choice matters

The two grades are chemically the same compound. What differs is whether a small stabilising additive has been included to protect the material during long or humid storage.

Unstabilised

Pure C₆H₁₂N₄, nothing added

The default for chemistry that cannot tolerate a foreign component. Used in phenolic resin hardening, rubber compounding and as a synthesis intermediate, where an additive would show up in the final product or interfere with the reaction.

Stabilised

Protected against caking and slow loss

Carries a small quantity of a stabilising agent that suppresses caking and the gradual decomposition that humidity and warmth can cause. Chosen where material sits in a warehouse for months, travels by sea, or is pressed into fuel tablets.

A flammable solid and a skin sensitiser — handled accordingly

Hexamine is straightforward to work with, provided two properties are respected: it burns, and repeated skin contact can sensitise. Everything below is summary information — the Safety Data Sheet is the authoritative document.

Precautionary statements Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources — no smoking (P210). Avoid breathing dust (P261). Wear protective gloves (P280). Contaminated work clothing should not be taken out of the workplace (P272).
First aid, in short Eyes: rinse cautiously with water for at least 10 minutes, removing contact lenses if present. Skin: wash with plenty of soap and water; remove contaminated clothing. Ingestion: rinse the mouth, do not induce vomiting, seek medical advice. Inhalation: move to fresh air.
Regulatory note — explosives precursor Hexamine appears on EU lists of substances relevant to the illicit manufacture of explosives. We supply professional and business users only, against a declared end use. Suspicious transactions, disappearances and thefts are recorded and reported as the regulations require. A first order therefore includes a short due-diligence step — it is quick, and it is not negotiable.
Food use (E239) Hexamine holds the additive number E239, but in the European Union its use as a preservative is restricted to a single defined case (Provolone cheese). Material supplied under this technical specification is intended for industrial use and is not offered as a food-grade additive.
